Dr. Bacon Saunders was the son of Dr. Smith Saunders and his wife Sara Claypool Saunders.
Dr. Smith Saunders and his family came to Texas from Kentucky in 1869. They first settled in Dallas, then according to his diary they moved to Bonham because the Carlton College was located here. His children were Allie, Bacon, Wirt, Omie, John C. and Joe.
Wirt, Bacon and John C.attended Carlton College.
Dr. Bacon Saunders was well known as a pioneer in surgical procedures. Most authorities agree that he was the first to perform an appendectomy in this part of the country.
