Joseph Haden Whitsett was one of Texas' last three remaining Confederate War veterans in 1947.
He was born in 1847 at Glasgow, Kentucky and died in 1950 at the age of 103 at his home in Bonham. He was the son of a pioneer Fannin County physician Dr. William Whitsett and his wife Elizabeth.
He came to Texas with his parents in 1855. They settled in the English community east of Bonham. On March 1873 he married Betty Stone.
Before moving to Bonham they lived on a farm outside of Dodd City. One of the last tributes paid to him was the rank of honorary Colonel afforded by Governor Allen Shivers.
