Description |
Roberta Dodd (1895-1954) was born in the Tanktown section of Bonham .She attended Washington School and later worked as a waitress at Curtiss Boarding House. Her singing talent brought her to the attention of several local women who arranged for her to sing at the Alexander Hotel in Bonham.With help from benefactors she attended Wiley College in Marshall TX for two years,then entered Fisk College in Chicago.After that she entered Chicago Musical College where she studied for six years. She met and married Capt.William Crawford. She later sang songs and arias in various cities throughout the United States.In 1931 she made her French debut at the Salle Gaveau in Paris. Now widowed, Roberta married Kojo Marc Tovalou-Houenou in 1932.In Paris she was known as PrincessTovalou-Houenou. He died in 1938. She had no children, after her health failed she returned to Bonham in 1948. She died on June 14 1954 and was buried in Gates Hill Cemetery in Bonham.
